UNCW Comes Back to Down Top-Seeded Drake

DAYTONA BEACH – Jaylen Sims’ layup with 4.3 seconds to play capped off a huge comeback and gave No. 9 UNCW a 76-65 win over top-seeded Drake in the first of four Quarterfinal Round games at the Ocean Center.The Seahawks trailed by 22 points, 50-28, with 18:04 to play in the second half before mounting their comeback. Two free throws by Shykeim Phillips pulled UNCW to with one, 75-74, with 56 second left. Down one with the ball, with 31 seconds to go, Phillips’ jumper was blocked by Tucker DeVries but Sims grabbed the rebound and made the layup with 4.3 seconds left. Drake had one last chance. After a timeout with four seconds left, ShanQuan Hemphill took the ball but his jumper at the buzzer did not connect and the Seahawks advanced.Sims ended the game with 11 points with Phillips leading the Seahawks with 24. Mike Okauru added 11 points. The Bulldogs received 15 points from Hemphill and 14 each from Tremmel Murphy and DeVries.UNCW will meet the winner of the Northern Colorado-UNC Asheville game in the CBI semifinals on Tuesday.
